Arusha National Park – A Compact Gem of Diverse Landscapes

Arusha National Park is a beautifully diverse conservation area located just 45 minutes from Arusha city, making it one of the most accessible safari destinations in northern Tanzania. Despite being relatively small compared to Tanzania’s major parks, it offers an impressive variety of landscapes, wildlife, and activities, making it ideal for half-day and full-day safaris.

A Park of Three Distinct Ecosystems

Arusha National Park stands out because it is composed of three unique ecological zones, each offering a different safari experience:

1. Mount Meru Forest Slopes

The towering presence of Mount Meru (4,566 m) dominates the park. Its lower slopes are covered with lush mountain forests where visitors may encounter:

Black-and-white colobus monkeys
Blue monkeys
Bushbuck
Duikers
A wide variety of forest bird species

The thick vegetation and scenic mountain views create a serene, natural atmosphere ideal for walking safaris and photography.

2. Ngurdoto Crater

Often called “Little Ngorongoro,” Ngurdoto Crater features steep volcanic walls surrounding a swampy floor rich with wildlife. From scenic viewpoints along the rim, visitors may spot:

Buffalo
Warthogs
Waterbuck
Olive baboons

The crater offers dramatic scenery and makes for fantastic panoramic photography.

3. Momella Lakes

To the northeast lies a chain of shallow alkaline lakes known as the Momella Lakes, famous for:

Seasonal flocks of flamingos
Abundant waterbirds
Giraffes feeding in the open meadows
Beautiful reflections of Mount Meru

These lakes provide one of the park’s most peaceful and picturesque settings, especially during early morning or sunset tours.

Wildlife Experience

While Arusha National Park does not have large predators like lions, it is home to:

Giraffes (one of the best parks to see them up close)
Zebras
Buffalo
Hippos
Bushbuck
Guereza colobus monkeys
Numerous bird species (over 400 recorded)

Its absence of large predators makes it perfect for walking safaris, one of its main attractions.

Unique Activities

Arusha National Park offers experiences not easily found in other northern circuit parks:

• Walking Safaris

Led by armed rangers, walking safaris allow visitors to explore the forest, waterfalls, and plains on foot. It’s one of the best places in Tanzania for safe and rewarding nature walks.

• Canoeing on Momella Lakes

A rare safari activity in Tanzania, canoe safaris allow guests to glide quietly along the water while watching giraffes drink, hippos wade, and flamingos feed.
